How do I generate a number based on my list

I have five fields that I list...Artist, Title, Year, Catogory, and Number. I am sorting on Artist then by Title. My question is how do I add a number starting from 001 thru 572 without haveing to manually input them in the number field under properties?

Fist, make sure you have correct number style selected in View-> Preferences -> Numbers. You need Style = "Number" and Width = "3".

Then, display albums in the list in the order in which you want them numbered.

Then, click menu Tools -> Renumber and select these options:

Range = entire list
Fill the gaps = unchecked
Preserve existing = unchecked

Then press OK and the numbers will be assigned from 001 to NNN and put into Reference number field in Library tab in album properties.
