I would like to have 2 simultaneous databases, one for CD collection and one for compressed files on a hard drive. I don't want to constantly close one and then reopen the other. Is it possible to have both databases open and switch between them? ???

Since you can choose "Format", why have separate databases?

No, you can only open one database at a time. The fastest way to switch between the databases is using recent database menu commands in Database menu.
